Iko Poran works in partnership with many local community organizations in Rio de Janeiro with whom we format volunteer programs to cater to the specific challenges these organizations face. At the same time, the programs provide positive rewarding experiences for foreign volunteers as they see at first hand the social and/or environmental impact of their work.
Volunteers participate in projects developed and operated by the local partner organizations and their community councils. The programs provide training for volunteers and communities, generating income and employment. And we do this in a transparent and ethical manner, sharing significant revenues with our partner organizations.
Broad range of projects:
Iko Poran offers a wide range of exciting, meaningful, rewarding and safe volunteer projects. Our variety of programs includes Teaching, Childcare, Community Development, NGO Support, Community Garden and Environment, Sports, Arts & Design and many others. We have the perfect volunteer project that matches your skills and interests. Please browse on the left hand menu the project you would like to do.
Most of our volunteer placements are Individual placements, specially developed according to the volunteer's abilities and interests. They are ideal for those who are keen to become partners in a development project. The programs can last up to 24 weeks. The longer the placement, the more beneficial the volunteer will be to the partner organizations, and the more they will learn from the experience.
Why pay to volunteer?
It may seem strange to pay a fee in order to provide your services for free! But there are good reasons for it. The placement fee covers the costs we incur in putting together meaningful placements, which volunteers will enjoy and local communities will benefit from. We need to do this preparation to make sure your placement runs as smoothly as possible. To learn more about the placement fee, please check the Fee section.
Programs take place all year round, but we have arrival days that are set to help us organize airport pick-ups, accommodations, Portuguese courses and placements. Volunteers should arrive on the first and third Sundays of each month. On the application form you can choose the start date that is better for you.
For programs with 4 weeks or more, please note that the free Portuguese course starts on the first Monday after the arrival days.
