The cultural diversity of Rio de Janeiro, with more than 400 years of history, has been the reason for it to be the main choice of visitors who come to Brazil. It is a huge city whose geography grants its title “Cidade Maravilhosa” (City of Wonders). It is located in one of the most beautiful places of the world, where the sea, mountains, forests and lakes all merge together.

Capital of the country until 1960, Rio de Janeiro is a highly cosmopolitan city which presents a range of attractions for visitors, including its legendary Carnival.

Now is the time to experience the re-emergence of Rio de Janeiro as a major world city. As the city prepares to host the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games, Rio de Janeiro is experiencing a social and cultural renaissance. City authorities are redoubling their efforts to tackle the city´s long-standing social problems. As part of the Government´s program of stabilizing the favelas (shanty towns), deep-rooted problems of criminality and poverty are being addressed with renewed vigor.

Volunteering with Iko Poran will give you a unique opportunity to witness this transformation at first hand. Iko Poran works with a range of partner organizations closely involved in improving the lives of the residents of the favelas. We are part of this city and understand the needs of our communities. We are committed to their long-term development. This makes us uniquely placed to ensure our volunteers experience the real Rio and the real Brazil.
