In the favela community of Barreira do Vasco there is an area nicknamed ´´Uga-Uga`` where families of sometimes 10 people are living in a hut made from scraps of plywood and canvas. Some don´t have a kitchen or bathroom area. These tiny unstable constructions let in the wind and especially the rain. Without protection from the elements children and elderly people suffer from being exposed to constant dampness and get sick as a consequence. Volunteer to help build houses for these familes – no special skills needed!

WHY VOLUNTEER BUILDING HOUSES?
You can help construct a simple, small yet comfortable and safe brick house for these families. The brick house includes an area to sleep that also fuctions as the living area, a kitchen area and a separate bathroom. It also includes a roof top that can be used as a fuctional area – such as to dry clothes and where children can play.
Everyone has the right to decent and safe living conditions – you can help make this a reality for families in need.
SPECIAL SKILLS FOR HELPING BUILD HOUSES
You DO NOT need any special skills to particpate in this program just a willingness to particpate in some hand-ons physical work. There is a professional builder to supervise and give you directions. This program has a minimum 2 week and maximum 4 week placement.
Volunteers will not be required to take the Portuguse course due to the nature of the project, manual labour, and in order to spend as much time as possible at the construction and see the beautiful sights, sounds and tastes that Rio de Janeiro has to offer.
The special prices for this program are due to the material cost and professional builder required: 2 weeks: R$ 1.500 3 weeks: R$ 2.010 4 weeks: R$ 2.520 5 weeks: R$ 3.030 etc.
